Souls Of Mischief, the Oakland, CA quartet and members of the mighty Hieroglyphics Crew are very proud to announce the release of the artwork and track listing for their new album, Montezuma's Revenge. The crew tapped artist Steven Lopez to paint a portrait of the group and album producer Prince Paul. Lopez is perhaps best known for his work with Erykah Badu. The album will be available December 2nd via Hiero Imperium Records.
As Souls Of Mischief releases the track listing for their new album, their collaborative effort for the album artwork should be brought to light as well. This being their first album in almost 10 years, the group decided to try something different this time around for the album cover. With all previous album covers based around photography, Souls decided to enlist a painter to handle the artwork. Steven Lopez ended up being chosen to handle the delegated task. For those who are not familiar with Steven Lopez's work, his resume runs the gamut from street art to a collaboration with Erykah Badu. Lopez, being a fan of SOM himself since their debut album, 93 'til Infinity gladly accepted. "When you work with other artists of the same caliber, there is no need to convince or walk them through. They are legit and it didn't take us long to have faith in each other. The icing on the cake was the fact that these cats are die-hard b-boys. This has always been my attitude in life and it was great to share it with them," stated Lopez when asked about his experience working with SOM. He succeeds in creating a painting that not only captures the group in its entirety, but the subtleties of each member individually as well. The result is a narrative image. He explains, "I dislike pictures that are purposely posed, so I would talk to each member and ask them to reenact certain memories and moments. Those were the shots that I was looking for. It was like a picture that alludes to another story."
